We all know how having a baby changes your life and yes, your lifestyle changes with it, but for me has been more drastic. By changes, I don’t mean going our for drinks with friends, I mean my baby has changed the way I think and look at things. Not only am I more selfless and full of infinite love, I’ve become so much more conscious of everything that surrounds my precious newborn and overall my family. I just want the best for all of us! And to be happy and healthy for as long as possible. Therefore I have become more and more aware of the chemicals in our lives as well as the importance of fresh organic food vs processed ready made goods. Already during pregnancy I tried to eat my best, but besides the food we consume, it’s actually crazy how everything else we use in our daily lives is so toxic and affects our health in the long run. Also making your own products means you consume less plastic, since you can buy things in bulk and produce less waste in that way. I'm also wearing less makeup, hardly any nail polish and so on.. but it's actually all come very naturally!
For example the household products and the cosmetics we use. The washing powders/liquids contain so many harmful chemicals and through the clothes we wear and sheets we sleep on, they enter our bodies. Your skin is your largest organ, absorbing up to 60 percent of what you put on it. And shockingly 80% of the ingredients that are used in daily personal care products have never been tested for safety! So besides opting for more natural products (for example I use a great natural sunscreen with organic ingredients by Natural Tone), I have started to research how you can make so many of these products yourself at home with natural ingredients and in that way, I can also produce a lot less plastic trash. And you also save money!
- Save you and your family's health
- Save the world (at least a tiny bit!)
- Save some money!
Before Amanda was born, I had to wash all of her clothes, but of course I didn’t want to use a standard laundry detergent that contains chemicals and fragrances that can irritate baby’s delicate skin. But then it thought, why are we using it to wash our own clothes? So I started using baking soda and soap nuts to wash her clothes as well as our own (I also ordered a bio one for the super dirty laundry should we need it) and I make my own softener from Vinegar & Lavender essential oil!
Another product I started making myself is the universal Cleaning Spray aka All Purpose Cleaner. I ordered some glass spray bottles online (or you can use your old product’s plastic bottle) and just whisked together a few components. There are other recipes out there that use also Vinegar and Tea Tree Oil, so feel free to test our which one you like the most! If you make the Lemon one, then I wouldn’t recommend it on natural stone because it may cause pitting. I’ve also made my own toothpaste, dishwasher powder and mosquito spray and I will share these recipes also with you in my next post!
Natural Cleaning Spray
Fill the bottle with water (I used 0,5L bottle)
1 or 2 spoons of Castile Soap
(enough to cover the bottom of the bottle)
10-15 drops of Lemon Essential Oil
