The Balcón de Europa, Balcony of Europe, is a viewpoint in the centre of Nerja which gives incredible views across the Mediterranean sea. It is believed that the King Alfonso XII named the place, when he visited Nerja in 1885 after a disastrous earthquake and was captivated by the scene. Local folklore says that he stood upon the site where the Balcón is, and said "This is the balcony of Europe". It used to be a fortress designed to keep out British pirates and privateers. It’s a must visit when you’re in Nerja. Since it was just a few minute walk from our Hotel, we had a small stroll around the old town before dinner and then stayed for an aperativ near the Balcon and the church, whilst enjoying people watching and local street musicians.
