What to do in Bangkok: Blue Elephant Cooking School

We only stayed two nights in Bangkok, so we didn't have that much time to wonder around, but we did a bit of shopping at the modern Asiatique Night Market and for the first time ever we also took a Thai cooking class at the best Cooking School in Bangkok - The Blue Elephant. Founded by Chef Nooror and her husband in 2000, Blue Elephant restaurant and cooking school is located in a stunning colonial era building in Bangkok. But this wasn't the first restaurant of the couple. They had already founded Blue Elephant restaurants in Brussels (1980), London (1986), Copenhagen (1990) and Paris (1991).

The Blue Elephant cooking school helps the students understand, appreciate and create dishes that are essential parts of our authentic Thai cuisine menu. There are two classes per day 7 days a week, so you can attend a class either in the morning or in the afternoon. If you choose the morning class, you will first visit the morning market accompanied by our instructor, where you will learn to carefully choose the right ingredients for your own home cooking. This is followed by the instructor-led class. The session ends with a delightful meal in their restaurant, where you will sample your own cooking.Since we attended the school on the second day we were in Thailand, we needed the sleep and therefore opted for the afternoon class. The team gave us a warm welcome and led us to the classroom that was fully equipped with the necessary facilities. We were given 4 exciting recipes and guided step by step through them by an experienced and knowledgeable instructor and then we made our way to the kitchen where we could cook all of these amazing dishes. Since we were there on a Wednesday afternoon we learned how to make the following dishes: Crispy Crab Soufflé, Sea Bass with Lime Dressing, Stir Fried Chicken with Chilli Paste and Sticky Rice with Coconut Custard.

I really enjoyed the whole experience and the chef was extremely experienced and friendly answering all of our questions. After the cooking, the best part is enjoying your own-cooked dished in their beautiful restaurant. When you're in Bangkok, I really recommend you to try at least one of their amazing cooking classes. Not only will you get a hands on experience in Thai cooking, you will also get the inside knowledge of local ingredients and after the class you can shop their amazing products in their shop area and try them out again at home. What a better way to treat your friends and family than your own home-cooked Thai dinner.
